Featuring art and stories made by the young people, the site-specific show was performed by professional actors and one young person who was formally at the hospital, and was the culmination of workshops taking place over nine months.
Our second commission by the Young Vic was a co-created show made with teenagers at the Maudsley Hospital, part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and those referred through Southwark and Lambeth Children & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Featuring art and stories made by the young people, the site-specific show was performed by professional actors and one young person who was formally at the hospital, and was the culmination of workshops taking place over nine months.
Through Bureau of Everything we reached a significantly excluded group as participants and audience, working in a mental health context which was new for us. We engaged with young people who might otherwise self-select out of participating in the arts. Our co-creators for this project were the profoundly excluded inpatients in a secure mental health ward for young people. Working with us they wrote, made, created and participated in a high-quality project that transformed their space and presented their work to an audience.
“I felt like a child in a sweet shop! I am a clinical Psychologist working for South London & Maudsley NHS Trust, predominantly with young people in care and this has been a great eye-opener for me in terms of how we might be able to adapt our services in a much more innovative and creative way.”
