What we do / Who we are

New International Encounter (NIE) is an international company that makes award-winning theatre performances and projects through a mix of physical theatre, multiple languages, live music, storytelling and a European ensemble. We have offices in Asker, Norway, in Prague, Czech Republic and in Cambridge in the UK.
We make theatre shows for children, young people, families and adults – for anyone who loves a great story.
We bring together artists from different places, backgrounds and trainings to work together. We work with communities, school classes and places to co-create imaginative and transformative performance projects.
We host talent development opportunities where we share our ways of working, our ways of seeing and being together and our ways of looking at the world.

History
Formed in 2001, NIE rehearsed its first three shows in the old Sokol gymnastic hall in Mseno, a small town in the north of the Czech Republic. Those three shows – My Long Journey Home, Past Half Remembered and The End of Everything Ever – won numerous awards and were performed all over the world, from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to New York, Mexico City and Seoul. They now form the European Narratives Trilogy, and still tour together on special occasions…
Since creating the Trilogy, NIE has gone on to create new shows in co-production with venues and theatre companies from across Europe, including site-specific work and theatre for younger audiences.
NIE was selected to take part in the renowned Assitej World Congress in Copenhagen / Malmo in May 2011 (an international festival celebrating children’s theatre). At the closing event of the 10-day festival, NIE was awarded the prestigious 2011 Assitej Award for Artistic Excellence. This international award is only given every three years and is the first time a Norway or UK company has won the award since its inception in 1993.
