Welcome to Lisa Elmer, New International Encounter's new Executive Director. Let's find out what she's been up to since she started with us...
I was at a children’s birthday party at the weekend, making small talk with other parents, when someone asked what I did for work. As I spoke about how I’d recently changed jobs, it led me to on to reflecting on the start of my time with NIE.
Week one
It feels like a distant memory in some ways that much of my first week was spent reading various documents and fighting with IT systems – everything needed a login creating, sometimes 2, and don’t get me started on Wi-Fi connectivity at home – it was not my friend! I spent a great day at Polka Theatre this week – useful time meeting new people, but also watching two very different shows; The everywhere bear – a beautiful adaptation of the Julia Donaldson story, followed by Hairy – a fun (and loud) look at body hair.
Week two
Governance is a key part of my role so I’ve spent some time with the Chair of our Board this week, as well as introducing myself to our wider Board members and preparing papers for an upcoming finance subcommittee ahead of our August Board meeting.
Week three
I’ve attended a finance and risk subcommittee, and met with both our book keeper and finance guru now – I can see more pieces of the finance puzzle slotting into place including where I fit in too – it’s a light bulb moment!
A day focussed on fundraising with some of our Board members ended the week. It’s not easy for Trustees to be able to take full days away from their day jobs, and being able to find this time was really valuable in terms of both future strategy and my induction to the organisation’s fundraising needs.
Week four
Alex is in Japan and Michael is on holiday – I’m on my own and it’s not too scary! There’s much more to learn and do, but I realise just how much I’ve achieved so far. And importantly, how much I’m looking forward to what’s still to come in this new challenge….I’ve rewarded myself with a coffee and cake from Gail’s!
